The elephant in the womb

blue and green elephant with light

The elephant in the room flashed with a neon light

A glaring glow, a warning of a plight.

Ignored so long, in the florescent gloom, hidden in plain sight,

The elephant watched quietly, all through the night.

The elephant observed an awful lot of fright,

The cries for help, for relief, from contractions that bite.

The elephant in the womb knows the woman should be central,

But maternity care is too fragmental,

She could clearly see birthing environments are impedimental,

Which means too many women have births instrumental,

Leaving outcomes that can only be described as detrimental.

When we know just how birth can be supported and gentle.

The elephant knows we can celebrate and honour birth,

With communication and support, acknowledging a woman’s worth.
