The Long Goodbye

In the daily grind of mothering,

we are told ‘this too shall pass’

When the days are long,

we are told this too shall pass…

In the drudgery and groundhogness of mothering,

this too shall pass.

Often though we are not told,

That as this passes by,

it means our babies have grown.

and from the nest they fly,

The Years are short,

Their youth is brief,

and as each birthday comes,

so to does the steady march,

away from our arms,

A long goodbye,

A letting go,

A transformation taking place.

The child leaves – grown and changed

A mother grieves her loss,

She too transforms – becomes more bold

And holds forever in her heart

the child that once was.
